F.C. København must play in the 'relegation series' for the first time, after losing 1-2 to Randers. Newspaper B.T. calls the season a 'catastrophic season'. The Danish top club lost 1-2 at home to Randers on Sunday and finished seventh in the first part of the season. Both Mohamed Elyounoussi and Birger Meling were in the starting lineup, while young Liam West (18) was on the bench. – It's the biggest failure in Danish Superliga history, says Viaplay expert Peter Sørensen about the season of the dominant Danish club in the last decade. Ståle Solbakken trained FCK in two periods and led the club to eight league titles and four cup titles. This season, FCK played in the Champions League, but were eliminated after the first eight qualifying matches. The Danes ended with eight points, one behind Bodø/Glimt, who went on. FCK played, among other things, a draw against Bayer Leverkusen and Napoli – and beat Villarreal on the road. But in the league, it has been completely hopeless for the club, which has taken 15 league titles since 2000 and only once been outside the top three – 4th place in 2017/18. 'Elendige og pinlige FCK – de er jo HELT vekk!' summarized the newspaper B.T. and called this a 'catastrophic season'. Since the 2016/17 season, the Danish Superliga has been divided into two after the teams have met each other at home and away. Since 2019, the league has consisted of twelve teams – the six best competitors for the title , the six lowest to avoid relegation . The teams take their points into the playoffs, and therefore there is no real danger of FCK being relegated. But the humiliation that the fans feel is still enormous. Before Sunday's match against Randers, the players were met with banners with 'Dere er alle skyldige – skam dere'. Victory would have secured sixth place, instead Randers won after a penalty shootout twelve minutes into overtime. – I'm ashamed as a dog. As a dog, said midfielder Thomas Delaney to Viaplay. – It's my fault. It's our fault. It's so bad. We couldn't live up to expectations. We couldn't live up to the absolute minimum, continued 34-year-old. The European Cup hope for next season is not completely out for FCK. The winner of the 'relegation series' gets a chance to qualify for the Conference League. FCK can also get a qualification place for the Europa League through the cup. The team is in the semifinals and won 2–1 against Viborg in the first match. AGF and Midtjylland are in the other semifinal.
